Nigerian Dwarf Goats are a dwarf dairy goat originating in Africa, listed as "recovering" on the American Livestock Breed Conservancy's Conservation Priority list.
The Nigerian Dwarf makes a wonderful companion animal with its gentle disposition, and they are a productive dairy goat for their dwarf size. A doe generally produces one to two quarts of milk per day that is high in butterfat and results in rich, creamy cheese, making it the ideal dairy animal for small acreage.
Unfortunately, because of Maryland's strict dairy regulations and ban on raw milk of any kind, Touch the Earth Farm is unable at this time to offer edible goat's milk products for sale.
Our goal, however, is to offer high-quality goat's milk soap and lotion products to our customers in addition to using goat's milk as an important source of our animals' feed.
Goat meat, or chevon, is a delicious alternative to beef or lamb enjoyed all over the world, adding to this animal's value in sustainable living. They also make terrific brush clearers, preferring to browse instead of graze, and they thrive on wooded lots. I predict the popularity of this excellent little breed will continue to grow as people become more familiar with its many wonderful traits.
We are currently building our herd and are looking forward to bringing in another bloodline in 2009.
